How to show best sellers first in your Shopify collections

Updated October 10, 2026

Tags decide which products go in a collection. Sorting decides which ones shoppers see first. Shopify's built-in sort options use one criterion at a time and can't push out-of-stock products down. This guide shows how to combine MDTagPilot and MDPositions, two apps by the same publisher, to get both right.

RuleSales count (30 days) ≥ 50→bestseller

Step 1: tag your best sellers with MDTagPilot

Pick the Bestseller (30 days) template, check the preview, run the rule and activate it. Then create an automated collection in Shopify with Product tag is equal to bestseller. See our guide on tagging best sellers for the details.

Step 2: sort the collection with MDPositions

MDPositions reorders products inside your collections with up to 15 weighted criteria. For a Best sellers collection, a good start is:

  • Recent sales, high weight: the products ordered most come first.
  • Stock availability: out-of-stock products go to the bottom instead of disappointing shoppers.
  • Margin, lower weight: between two products that sell equally, the more profitable one comes first.

Apply the same logic to every collection

The same sort rule can cover all your collections, not only Best sellers. Each collection then shows its own top products first, without manual drag and drop. You can still pin products at the top for a campaign.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need both apps?

No. MDTagPilot alone builds tag-based collections, and MDPositions alone sorts any collection. Together, one decides what goes in the collection and the other decides the order.

Does MDPositions use MDTagPilot's tags?

Yes, if you want. MDPositions has a Tag Match criterion (Starter plan and higher) that moves up the products carrying a given tag, for example bestseller. It also has its own criteria based on your Shopify data, such as recent sales, stock and margin.

Is sorting automatic?

Yes, on MDPositions' paid plans: sort rules run every 24 hours on Starter and every 6 hours on Pro.
