How to add and remove seasonal tags on Shopify automatically (Christmas, Black Friday…)

Updated October 10, 2026

Seasonal collections need to go live on time and disappear on time. Doing it by hand means tagging products the night before and remembering to clean up afterwards. This guide shows how to schedule tags with a date range, so they appear and disappear on their own.

RuleToday's date between 20261201 and 20261224 AND Product type = Gift→christmas

How date conditions work

The Today's date condition compares the current date, in the YYYYMMDD format, with the dates you enter. Between 20261201 and 20261224 is true from December 1 to December 24, 2026 included.

Set up the rule

On the Pro plan, create a rule with ALL conditions must match (AND):

  • Condition 1: Today's date between 20261201 and 20261224.
  • Condition 2: the products concerned, for example Product type is equal to Gift, or In collection is equal to gifts.
  • Tag to apply: christmas.
  • Remove tag when conditions no longer match: on, so the tag is removed on December 25.

Activate the rule in advance

Create and activate the rule a few weeks before the season. Until the start date, the preview shows that no product would be tagged. On December 1, the tag appears within the hour, and so does your Christmas collection if it is based on this tag.

Ideas of seasonal rules

  • Black Friday: date range of the event AND On sale, tag black-friday.
  • Summer sale: date range AND Discount % ≥ 20, tag summer-sale.
  • Back to school: date range AND Product type is equal to Stationery, tag back-to-school.

Frequently asked questions

Which time zone is used for the date?

Your store's time zone, as set in your Shopify settings.

How quickly is the tag added on the start date?

Within the hour. On the Pro plan, rules with a date condition are re-evaluated every hour.

Can I prepare several seasons in advance?

Yes. Create one rule per season with its own date range and tag, for example black-friday and christmas. Each one only tags products while its dates are current.
