How to find Shopify products with no image or no SKU

Updated October 10, 2026

A product with no photo rarely sells, and a product with no SKU makes stock management and marketplaces harder. In a large catalog, finding them by hand is slow. This guide shows how to tag incomplete products automatically, so your team can fix them.

RuleImage count = 0 OR Has SKU is false→to-complete

Set up the rule

In MDTagPilot, create a new rule:

  • Condition 1: Image count is equal to 0.
  • Condition 2: Has SKU is false.
  • Condition logic: ANY condition must match (OR), so a product missing either one is tagged.
  • Tag to apply: to-complete.
  • Remove tag when conditions no longer match: on.

Work through the list

In your Shopify admin, filter the Products page by the to-complete tag. Each product you fix loses the tag when you save it, so the list shrinks as you go.

For a team, Shopify Flow can notify someone when a product receives the tag.

Keep incomplete products off your store

In your automated collections, add the condition Product tag is not equal to to-complete. Products without a photo then stay out of the collections until they are ready.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this on the Free plan?

Yes, with one condition: either Image count = 0 or Has SKU is false. Combining both with OR requires the Pro plan.

When is a product considered to have a SKU?

As soon as at least one of its variants has a non-empty SKU.

Does the tag disappear once the product is fixed?

Yes, if Remove tag when conditions no longer match is on. On the Pro plan, the product is re-evaluated as soon as you save it.
