How to automatically tag best sellers on Shopify

Updated October 10, 2026

A Best sellers collection converts well, but keeping it accurate by hand means checking reports and editing tags every week. This guide shows how to tag best sellers automatically from your order data, and remove the tag when a product slows down.

RuleSales count (30 days) ≥ 50→bestseller

Why tag best sellers instead of picking them by hand

Shopify can sort a collection by best selling, but it cannot filter one. To build a collection that only contains your top products, or to show a badge on them, you need a tag that reflects current sales.

Updating that tag by hand does not scale: sales move every day, and a product that sold well last month can stay in the collection long after it stopped selling.

Set up the rule in MDTagPilot

Open MDTagPilot, go to Rule templates and pick Bestseller (30 days). The rule contains:

  • Condition: Sales count (30 days) greater than or equal to 50. MDTagPilot counts the orders that contain the product, using Shopify sales data.
  • Tag to apply: bestseller.
  • Remove tag when conditions no longer match: on, so products leave the collection when sales drop.

Choose the right threshold

50 orders in 30 days suits a store with steady traffic. For a smaller catalog, start lower (10 or 20) and adjust. The preview shows how many products would be tagged before anything is written, so you can try several thresholds safely.

Use the tag in your store

Once products carry the bestseller tag, you can:

  • Create an automated collection in Shopify with the condition Product tag is equal to bestseller.
  • Show that collection on your homepage or in your menu.
  • Display a Best seller badge in your theme for products with this tag.

Keep it up to date automatically

New rules start inactive. Check the preview, run the rule once, then activate it. On the Pro plan, MDTagPilot re-evaluates sales-based rules every hour, so the tag follows your sales without any manual work.

Frequently asked questions

Does MDTagPilot count units sold or orders?

Orders. A product counts once per order that contains it, whatever the quantity. This avoids one bulk order turning a product into a best seller.

Can I use revenue instead of order count?

Yes. Replace the condition with Revenue (30 days) to tag the products that bring in the most money rather than the ones ordered most often.

Will a product lose the tag if its sales drop?

Yes, if Remove tag when conditions no longer match is on. On the Pro plan the rule is re-evaluated every hour, so the tag disappears as soon as the product falls below your threshold.
